Title: Variable granularity of memory and intellectual flexibility: Bergson’s inversed cone model of the mind

Abstract:
The most impressive feature of Bergson’s philosophy lies in its consistent approach to the philosophical problems of the mind in general, in terms of the temporal structure of the system. It shows us a broad and comprehensive picture, endowed with necessary specificities, which is why it is theoretically attractive to modern engineering interests.
Bergson divides the problems of mind into two major phases in response to whether the information resource is current or past. In this talk, we focus not on the first aspect, which deals with the phenomenal quality of consciousness, but on the second aspect, the inversed cone model of memory, which enables the mind to perform higher intellectual activities.
Bergson proposes a model in which one’s entire memory, taken as an integrated system, is transformed in various ways in terms of its condensation (or granularity) and organisation, corresponding to each “plane” of consciousness. Distinguishing horizontal association within each plane from the vertical movement through different levels, he discusses the flexible creativity of intellection rather than merely combining specific tasks. In this presentation, I would like to provide discussion material for reviewing this model from the perspective of artificial intelligence, starting from the Paradox of the similarity association.
